This project called for a new extension and internal layout to make the best use of space available within this family home

Situated in a picturesque area of southwest Sheffield, this property suffered as a result of a cramped and outdated kitchen and utility room which left the rear of the house lacking light and access to the garden. In addition to this, the existing layout meant that the upstairs bedrooms were stuck with tiny ensuite bathrooms that were difficult to use and unpleasant to inhabit.

We were commissioned to design a kitchen-diner extension that would open up the back of the house, alongside an internal reconfiguration that would free up space for much more comfortable ensuite bathrooms to each bedroom.

Light was key to the development of the project, and guided the design towards the bi-fold doors and large rooflight that defined the finished project, flooding the extension with light and maximising permeability between house and garden.

Wanting to save on planning costs, the project was fulfilled within the constraints of permitted development. This lighter touch approach to planning often requires no planning application to be submitted providing certain conditions are met. However, this had no impact on the quality of design – we were keen to specify a high standard of finish internally to ensure the completed project was suitably equipped for modern family life.
