We were commissioned to produce designs for this home gym and garden room in a converted barn, working up to and including RIBA Stage 4

Dowcarr Barn is a derelict agricultural structure located within the curtilage of a listed building, presenting both a creative opportunity and a heritage-sensitive design challenge. Our client approached us with a distinctive and playful brief: to transform the disused barn into a multifunctional space comprising a home gym and shower room on one side, and a bar and games room on the other.

Our scope included full interior design and detailing, with careful attention to both functionality and character. We designed integrated tiled shower seating for post-workout comfort, alongside a bespoke built-in bar to anchor the social space. Lighting, finishes, and spatial flow were all considered holistically to ensure the space remained cohesive and inviting.

In parallel, we undertook a sensitive upgrade of the building fabric. Using breathable natural insulation and lime plaster, we improved thermal performance while maintaining the integrity and breathability essential for heritage buildings. The result is a characterful yet high-performing conversion that respects its historic context while providing a thoroughly modern and enjoyable use.
